Guatemala 1966: The Photography of L. Rupert Chambers

Tue, February 20, 2018 | Benson Latin American Collection, 1st floor gallery

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

The Benson Latin American Collection presents an exhibition opening and gallery talk by photographer and LLILAS (ILAS) alumnus L. Rupert Chambers.

Chambers writes, "In 1966, I was one of a small group of UT graduate students doing research in Guatemala. While there, I devoted my free time and perhaps a little more to taking hundreds of photographs of the people and the countryside of Guatemala. These images provide an intimate and authentic time capsule of life in Guatemala at an important juncture in its history. The people portrayed were on the cusp of a civil war that was not to end until 30 years later, in 1996. It would destroy more than 600 villages, cause 200,000 deaths, and displace 1.5 million people."

Chambers has donated a large collection of his photographs to the Nettle Lee Benson Latin American Collection. Photographs to be displayed in this exhibition were chosen by the artist.

Free and open to the public.
