LLILAS Benson Welcomes Professor Luis Urrieta as New Director of Student Programs

Luis Urrieta Jr. joins the leadership of LLILAS Benson as director of student programs. A longtime faculty affiliate in Latin American Studies, Urrieta holds the Suzanne and John L. Adams Endowed Professorship at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education.

According to his bio on the College of Education website, Urrieta’s research interests "center around cultural and racial identities; agency as social and cultural practice; social movements and collective action related to education; and learning in family and community contexts. He is specifically interested in Chicanx, Latinx, and Indigenous (P'urhépecha) cultures and identities, activism as a social practice in educational spaces, oral and narrative traditions in qualitative research, and Indigenous knowledge systems and research methodologies."

Urrieta is author of the award-winning book Working from Within: Chicana and Chicano Activist Educators in Whitestream Schools (2009) in addition to an extensive list of other publications. Most recently, he is co-editor, with George W. Noblit, of Cultural Constructions of Identity: Meta-Ethnography and Theory (2018). In 2014, Urrieta received the César E. Chávez Champions of Change award from President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony. In its announcement of the award, the White House cited Urrieta’s work with Latinx immigrant and Indigenous communities in the United States, and his advocacy for those populations through mentoring, teaching, and cultivating leadership around critical issues.

LLILAS Benson is pleased to welcome Luis Urrieta to the helm of student programs!
