Why Pursue Honors?

The program provides:

  • The opportunity for majors to do in-depth and original research on a Latin American topic
  • The opportunity to work one-on-one with a member of the Latin Americanist faculty
  • Personal satisfaction from doing independent, focused work outside the normal course structure of the major
  • Exposure to the type of work that one can expect in graduate or professional school

Requirements

  • GPA of 3.0 at time of graduation for all university courses taken
  • A 3.5 GPA at time of graduation in courses with Latin American content
  • At least 60 semester hours of coursework completed

Students should consult the honors adviser prior to the first or second semester of the junior year. Students transferring to UT at the beginning of the junior year should speak with the honors adviser during their initial registration period.

  • LAS 679HA - research tutorial
  • LAS 679HB - writing tutorial

Thesis Procedure

  • Select thesis topic during the second semester of the junior year
  • Select thesis adviser to direct research
  • Select second reader
  • Oral defense of the thesis (optional)

Additional Information

  • The standard thesis is approximately 30-50 pages long
  • LAS 679HA and 679HB, 6-hour total, are over and above the hours required for the major
  • Students are encouraged to do research in Latin America
  • The thesis should include a significant component of original research
