HHER Lifestyle

Project summary:

The overall goal of the Heart Healthy and Ethnically Relevant (HHER) Lifestyle Program was to advance the understanding of how to effectively promote cardiovascular disease risk reduction in health care settings among financially disadvantaged African American women. The randomized clinical trial trained primary care providers to deliver brief tailored behavioral counseling to participants with nurse assisted goal setting.

Patients of providers were randomly assigned to an intervention or standard care group. Patients in the intervention condition received tailored provider-delivered counseling, goal-setting sessions; a community resource guide, a monthly newsletter; and monthly telephone counseling. The standard care condition participants received tailored provider-delivered counseling, a goal-setting session at baseline with generic health education materials, and a community resource guide.
