Public Safety
LRI affiliates lead research projects on policing, courts, and corrections, with an emphasis on advancing justice system effectiveness, accountability, and improving public safety. Drawing on UT’s nationally recognized scholars in sociology, criminology, public affairs, data science, and law, LRI projects include large-scale program evaluations, research on violence reduction and institutional safety, and innovative applications of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to improve correctional decision-making. Affiliates also examine critical issues such as crime prevention, language access, and disparities in justice outcomes, producing rigorous evidence that informs policy and practice and strengthens outcomes for justice-impacted populations.
Research Publications
LRI research publications include peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, academic books and research reports.

The Community Oversight Lab
OL began with an interest in understanding the attitudes, motivations, and experiences of people engaged with overseeing local law enforcement either formally or informally. Our research draws from in-depth, semi-structured interviews with officials, volunteers, and other members of the community who participate in community oversight of police and sheriff’s departments in California, Oregon, Texas, and elsewhere.
