Honors

The Honors Program in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies is designed for undergraduates who wish to pursue advanced independent research in the field of study. Students work for an entire academic year on an Honor's Thesis project under the supervision of a MALS faculty mentor. Many of these MALS majors go on to pursue graduate studies.

The requirements for admission to the Honors Program are: (1) official status as a MALS major; (2) a UT grade point average of at least 3.00; (3) a grade point average of at least 3.50 in the coursework required for the MALS major; and (4) a grade of A in an upper-division Mexican American Studies course.

The requirements for graduation with Special Honors, which are in addition to the requirements for the major, are: (1) official status as a MALS major; (2) a UT grade point average of at least 3.00; (3) a grade point average of at least 3.50 in the coursework required for the MALS major; (4) a grade of A in an upper-division Mexican American Studies course; (5) a grade of A in MAS 679HB; (6) satisfactory performance on an oral presentation of the Honors Thesis completed in MAS 679HB; and (7) completion at the University of at least sixty semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree.

 

MALS Honors Program Admission Criteria

  1. Official Status as MALS Major
  2. UT GPA of 3.00
  3. MALS GPA of 3.50
  4. Upper-Division MAS course with a grade of A

 

MALS Special Honors Criteria

  1. Official Status as MALS Major
  2. UT GPA of 3.00
  3. MALS GPA of 3.50
  4. Upper-Division MAS course with a grade of A
  5. MAS 679HB with a grade of A
  6. Oral presentation based on honors thesis completed in MAS 679HB
  7. Completion of at least 60 semester hours toward undergraduate degree
