Introduction

As a Marine Option midshipman or Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP) student, you will have taken your first step towards a series of trials that will not only test your mental but physical abilities as well, as you seek to obtain a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

The pride, honor and responsibility of earning a commission as an officer in the United States Marine Corps is more than an accomplishment—it begins a newfound sense of direction and purpose. From the moment their 2nd Lieutenant bars are pinned on until the day their military service ends, Marine Officers are entrusted to lead the Marines in their command in service to our nation—fighting to win every battle they face.

Requirements

Candidates must pass Officer Candidates School (Marine Option midshipmen in the summer between their junior and senior year; MECEPs in the summer prior to starting their first year of school) in order to commission as Marine Corps officers.

Pipeline

After commissioning as a Second Lieutenant, the officer will attend The Basic School (TBS) in Quanitco, Virginia. This six-month school's mission is to train and educate newly commissioned or appointed officers in the high standards of professional knowledge, esprit-de-corps, and leadership required to prepare them for duty as company grade officers in the operating forces, with particular emphasis on the duties, responsibilities and warfighting skills required of a platoon commander. While in TBS, the Marine will be assigned their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), or their job in the Marine Corps. Following TBS, the officer will attend more specialized training in their MOS before going out into the fleet.
