Getting Involved Outside The Classroom...

Aside from opportunities with the Portuguese Flagship Program, there are many ways for students to practice their Portuguese at the University and with the greater Austin community.

Projeto Brasil Teaching Assistant Fellowships

Each year, the PFP offers 4 fellowship opportunities for students to assist with classroom preparation and instruction at Projeto Brasil. Projeto Brasil is a local non-profit educational and cultural organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Brazilian culture. Students are awarded $750 tutition reimbursement for their participation in the fellowship.

Brazil Center at University of Texas at Austin: Brazil Center

The Brazil Center's mission is to support Brazilian studies across academic disciplines at the University of Texas, to promote collaborative research and exchange between Texas and Brazil, and to raise awareness of Brazil and its culture through community outreach. 

Internships at LLILAS

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, a multidisciplinary institute that integrates several centers and programs devoted to promote interest in the region, is the oldest Latin American Studies program in the United States and one of the best worldwide. LLILAS has an unpaid internship program designed to provide UT students with the opportunity to gain professional experience by learning about the work of multiple programs within LLILAS or to develop research skills by working with some of our most distinguished Latin Americanist faculty.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu Club at UT

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu (BJJ) club at the University of Texas is a  student organization dedicated to promoting affordable and quality Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction in a safe and fun environment.Click here to learn more about BJJ at UT.

Bate Papo Sessions

Join the Dept. of Spanish & Portuguese for our weekly Bate-Papo Portuguese conversation group! It's a relaxed and friendly environment to practice your Portuguese. All levels are welcome! This semester Bate Papo will be held Tuesdays in BEN 4.122 from 4pm-5pm CT.

UT PALS Portuguese Language Circle

The UT PALS Portuguese Language Circle is an informal conversation group that meets every Thursday from 5-6 pm at the picnic tables in front of Gregory Gym. We are open to all levels and are a very casual group, so no matter if you are just starting out or if you are fluent, you are welcome with us! We chat in Portuguese for an hour about anything and everything - TV shows, language learning struggles, our classes, etc. Please note that we don't formally teach the language, so be ready to try your hand at speaking to the best of your ability.

Location: Thursdays, 5-6pm at the picnic tables outside Gregory Gym
