The Boren Scholarship

Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Portuguese Flagship Scholars who apply for and are awarded a Boren Scholarship could receive up to $20,000 toward funding their Capstone Experience in Brazil.

Benefits of Becoming a Boren Scholar

As a Boren Scholar, you have the privilege of receiving non-competitive hiring authority (Schedule A (r) and NDAA’13) when applying for Federal jobs. Non-competitive positions mean that jobs within the Federal Government are open to select candidates, as opposed to the general public. Under this authority, hiring managers may hire candidates without having to go through the full application process. This is highly sought after way to join the Federal Government as it increases your chances of hire.

As an employee of the Federal Government there are many locations and paths for service throughout the United States. The National Security Education Program (NSEP) stipulates that Boren recipients complete their service requirement in one of the following priority agencies:

Below are some examples of how and where you could take your educational major one step further with a career in the Federal Service:
