Joynes Living and Learning Community:

A Unique Opportunity for Student Writers

In partnership with University Housing, the Plan II Honors Program sponsors the Joynes Readers and Writers Living and Learning Community (Joynes LLC), a special group for firstyear students interested in creative writing. Residents in the Joynes LLC live together in a reserved section of Carothers dormitory. The proximity is intended to foster friendships and encourage residents to share their writing with each other.

Residents in the Joynes LLC meet regularly with a faculty sponsor and with a resident assistant (RA), for both learning exercises and social activities.

The Carothers building is also home to the Joynes Reading Room, a small library and event venue operated by the Plan II Program. Here we host several visiting writers throughout the year, who give public readings of their work, and who meet separately with residents of the LLC to answer questions about writing—as both a craft and a career. In recent years, Joynes LLC residents have shared meals with Pulitzer-Prize winners, bounced ideas off of bestselling novelists, and Zoomed with journalists based in Africa and Europe.

Students interested in the Joynes Readers and Writers Living and Learning Community can find more information, and an application to apply, through the Housing portal.
