Currently a graduate student in Sociology and 2020-21 Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Trainee at the Population Research Center at UT, Matt's main research area is education. Specifically, he focuses on school discipline and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics coursework during high school. Additional areas of research include crime, immigration, and health. He earned his M.A. from UT in 2018 with a thesis titled: Suspended in Context: School Discipline, STEM Course-Taking, and School Racial/Ethnic Composition.

Originally from Chicago, Matt moved to Austin in 2012 to pursue undergraduate degrees in Sociology (B.A.) and Applied Learning and Development (B.S.), which he earned in 2016.
