Biography

Kathleen is a doctoral candidate and trainee at the Population Research Center. She is pursuing a PhD in sociology with a specialization in demography. Prior to beginning her PhD, Kathleen received her MA in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Her research interests include sexual and reproductive health, fertility, gender, and social policy. She was an NICHD Pre-Doctoral Fellow from 2018-2019 and has been a research associate for several projects, including the Texas Policy Evaluation Project (TxPEP), which evaluates the impact of legislation in Texas related to women’s reproductive health; Project SANA, a study of self-managed abortion in the United States; and Tsogolo la Thanzi (TLT), a longitudinal study examining women's reproductive goals and behaviors in an AIDS epidemic.

Her dissertation employs both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate the individual, social, and structural determinants of health-seeking behaviors. How do people's identities and beliefs influence their engagement with the formal healthcare system, and conversely, how does healthcare and (de)medicalization shape individual experiences and perceptions of health and the body? These questions are particularly significant in the realm of reproductive health, where decisions to seek contraception or abortion, have a baby, or end fertility via sterilization are often major life events connected to identity, meaning, and overall life satisfaction. In support of this research, she was awarded the 2019 Emerging Scholars in Family Planning grant.

Her work appears in Social Science and Medicine, Population Studies, Contraception, American Journal of Public HealthPerspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, AJOG, and BMJ Sexual and Reproductive Health, and has been featured across major news outlets, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Wired.
