Upcoming job workshop.

The PRC and Sociology will be hosting a non-academic job workshop for PRC and sociology graduate students Friday Nov. 3 at 11:30 am in CLA 3.102E.


11:30 – 1:00    Panel: “Non-academic Jobs for Demographers and Sociologists”

This will be a Q&A with sociologists in non-academic jobs – find out what kind of work they do, how their graduate education prepared them for their work, and what the experience of working in nonacademic settings is like. Speakers will include:

Juanita Chinn, Statistician / Program Officer, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)

Jane Ebot, Family Planning Service Delivery Technical Advisor, USAID

Allan Parnell, The Cedar Grove Institute for Sustainable Communities

Lloyd Potter, Texas State Demographer, Director of the Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research and Texas State Data Center, UT San Antonio

Rita Stephan, Director, Middle East Partnership Initiative, US State Department


1:00 – 1:45      Lunch with the Panelists


2:00 – 4:00      Student Panel: “Fellowships, Grants, and Scholarships”

Hosted by the Department’s Minority Liaison Initiative, this will be a Q & A Session with graduate students who have been successful in applying for fellowships, grants, and scholarships.  These students will answer questions about their process for choosing awards, asking for recommendations, and navigating the applications. To facilitate a thoughtful and productive discussion, if there is anything you would specifically like for them to consider, please email Shannon Malone ( your questions by TODAY. The panel will be followed by a brief happy hour on the patio.
