Required Readings:
Hunsley & Lee. Introduction to Clinical Psychology: An Evidence-Based Approach
Wedding & Corsini. Case Studies in Psychotherapy (Fifth Edition)
Selected Online Readings Posted on Blackboard.
Objectives:
The major objective of the course is to provide you with an overview of the field of clinical psychology. Four major topic areas will be covered. These include:
1. Historical roots and conceptual models in clinical psychology
2. Professional issues in clinical psychology
3. Assessment techniques used in clinical psychology
4. Therapeutic approaches in clinical psychology
Student Prerequisites:
For psychology majors - upper-division standing and Psychology 301 and 418 with a grade of at least C in each;
For Nonmajors - upper-division standing, Psychology 301 with a grade of at least C, and one of the following with a grade of at least C: Biology 318M, Civil Engineering 311S, Economics 329, Educational Psychology 371, Government 350K, Kinesiology 373, Mathematics 316, Psychology 317, Sociology 317L, Social Work 318, Statistics 309.
Exams and Grading:
Five regular exams will be given during the semester. Each exam will consist of 60 questions of the objective variety, namely multiple choice, true false, and fill in the blank. Exam questions will be distributed equally from material presented in class and the assigned readings. Make-up exams will be given only under special circumstances (e.g., medical, family emergency, etc.). Dr. Telch must approve all make-up exams in advance. There will be no exceptions.
Your grade in the course will be based on the total number of points earned on exam 5 and three other tests. In other words, your lowest score from the first four exams will be dropped. Or, you could skip one of the first four exams and still get an “A” in the course so long as your final point total is 216 or higher. Note, exam 5 cannot be skipped and must be included in your point total. There will be no exceptions. The total number of possible points one can earn in the course is 246 (4 exams x 60 points) + 6 extra credit points. Listed below are the total points to course grade conversion:
216-246 points = A range: 216-221 = A-; 222-246 = A
192-215 points = B range: 192-197 = B-; 198-209 = B; 210-215 = B+
168-191 points = C range: 168-173 = C-; 174-185 = C; 186-191 = C+
144-167 points = D range: 144-149 = D-; 150-161 = D; 162-167 = D+
< 144 points = F range: 0-125 = F-; 126-137 = F; 138-143 = F+
NOTE: A maximum of six additional points of optional extra credit can be earned by completing three research article summaries.
