Azfar Moin, University of Texas at Austin, will speak on "Oaths of Peace: A New Look at the Mughal Policy of 'Peace with All (Sulh-i Kull) Religions'" as part of the Spring South Asia Seminar series.

This lecture will introduce the main theme for the series, which is the Mughal policy of sulh-i kull ("peace with all" religions). I use the Mughal case to discuss the general problem of how, in different eras of Islamic history, Muslim sovereigns solved the problem of sealing peace (sulh) agreements with sacred oaths when such oaths involved swearing upon non-biblical deities. I argue that we can identify major shifts in the nature of Muslim kingship by paying attention to the different modes— charismatic, cultic, and legal—that rulers used to overcome this taboo.

The seminar series theme is "'Peace with All (Sulh-i Kull) Religions': Indo Persian Political Theology and Cosmopolitanism," convened by Azfar Moin, Religious Studies. A light reception will precede the event at 3pm.

This talk is FREE! and open to the public.
