Rapoport Fellows Program

The Rapoport Fellows Program is intended to support a wide variety of scholarship in the field of Jewish Studies. Faculty at the University of Texas at Austin appointed as Rapoport Fellows will be awarded up to two course releases, spread across two long semesters in a given academic year (reduction to a 1-1 teaching load), during which they will conduct research on a topic related to Jewish Studies. All Rapoport Fellows will present some aspect of their work during the year in which they hold the fellowship at an event sponsored by the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies.

Application Deadline: November 4, 2024

Eligibility
Tenure-track and tenured Faculty at the University of Texas at Austin pursuing research on a topic within Jewish Studies are eligible to apply for this program. Preference will be given to faculty affiliates of the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies who are actively teaching courses cross listed with Jewish Studies.

Application Requirements:
Applicants must submit the following materials to the director of the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies (SCJS): 1) 4-page Curriculum Vitae highlighting research/publications; 2) Project proposal that is no longer than three single-spaced pages. This project proposal should include a title and outline the project’s rationale and significance, research questions, and a research plan specifying the methods and methodology. The proposal should also note the short-term (peer-reviewed articles, book chapters) and long-term goals of the proposed project; 3) A statement from the applicant’s department chair indicating their support of the faculty member’s application and approval of the faculty member’s release from two courses spread across two long semesters in the academic year during which they would hold the fellowship. (Funding in the amount of $7,000 per course will be provided to the department for replacement instructors for Rapoport Fellows). All applications will be reviewed by a committee appointed by the executive committee of SCJS. Please note: If the project includes human subjects, IRB approval must be received before funds are released.

Successful applicants should acknowledge the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Texas at Austin in any publication resulting from a Rapoport Fellowship.

Funding for the Rapoport Fellows Program is provided by the Audre and Bernard Rapoport Regents Chair of Jewish Studies.
