Appleman Graduate Fellowship

The Appleman Graduate Fellowship supports conference participation and research (including travel) on Jewish topics, and language training relevant to pursuing Jewish Studies research.

General Eligibility:

Any student enrolled in a graduate program at UT who undertakes research on any Jewish topic in the course of their graduate career.

Amount: Up to $1,000

Due date: Ongoing. Please note that applications will be reviewed until all budgeted funds for a given academic year have been disbursed.

How to Apply:

The application should include the following items:

  • Completed application form
  • A statement describing the project for which you are seeking funding (up to 500 words)
  • A CV
  • A budget (including other sources of funding secured or pending if applicable)
  • A letter of support from the student's advisor

To complete your application, submit digital copies of all items:

Applications should be submitted in one email as Word or PDF attachments to scjs@austin.utexas.edu. Please note that applications should be submitted at least six weeks in advance of conferences, research trips, and training for which the applicant is seeking funds in order to allow for adequate time for the Graduate Fellowships Committee to review applications and for the funds to be disbursed, if awarded.

Jewish Studies Supplementary Graduate Fellowship

The Supplementary Graduate Fellowship (SGF) in Jewish Studies is intended for Ph.D. students
whose research is directly related or relevant to Jewish Studies. The fellowship can be used to
supplement a larger recruitment effort or to reward an excellent current student.

Stipend: Up to $5,000 (renewal is permitted)

Due date: February 5, 2024

Application Requirements:

  • One-page cover letter submitted by the nominating faculty member. This letter should 1) explain how the student's proposed research/study supports the mission of Jewish Studies at UT 2) explain how the student's research would enrich the intellectual exchange in the student's home department and enhance links between the home department and other units 3) outline the student's scholarly promise 4) detail other support offered by the student's home department.

  • For prospective students: Student's statement of purpose
  • For existing students: Student’s research proposal

The Jewish Studies Graduate Fellowships Committee, which consists of faculty from the Schusterman Center and relevant departments, will review fellowship applications.

Israel Studies Graduate Fellowships

These competitive fellowships aim to help recruit to UT Austin excellent doctoral students working on an Israel from any disciplinary perspective. The Graduate Fellowship supplements funds from students’ home programs or departments to help support rigorous original research in Israel Studies. Prospective PhD students are nominated through their home academic units. Faculty who wish to nominate an excellent prospective PhD student should contact Karen Grumberg at keren@austin.utexas.edu.

Appleman Graduate Fellowship Recipients
