Majors & Minors

Scholarships for Jewish Studies Majors, Jewish Studies Minors, and Holocaust and Genocide Studies Minors

1) David M. Rosenberg Scholarship for Jewish Studies Majors

Purpose: To support first-year Jewish Studies majors.
Amount: Up to $2,000
Deadline: October 20, 2023
Eligibility: Any first-year student who has formally declared Jewish Studies as a major. The recipient must plan to be enrolled full-time at UT as a Jewish Studies major in the semester following the application deadline.

Your application includes the following documents:

  1. Completed Application Form
  2. Resume
  3. An essay of up to 350 words in which you describe why you have chosen to major in Jewish Studies and what you hope to gain from your undergraduate education.
  4. A letter of recommendation from an educator, mentor, or other person who can comment on the student's interest in Jewish Studies and their academic aptitude.  The letter should be emailed directly to scjs@austin.utexas.edu

2) Henry Weiss Scholarship for Jewish Studies Majors

Purpose: To support Jewish Studies majors.
Amount: Up to $2,000
Deadline: October 20, 2023
Eligibility: Any student who has formally declared Jewish Studies as a major, including previous scholarship recipients. 

Please note: Eligible students may apply for this scholarship once per year.  Students may hold the scholarship in consecutive years. 

Your application includes the following documents: 

  1. Completed Application Form
  2. Resume
  3. A PDF of your current UT Transcript (non-official suffices)
  4. An essay of up to 350 words discussing how Jewish Studies has shaped your knowledge about a specific subject and how you expect that knowledge to inform your future academic and/or professional plans or goals.
  5. An essay of up to 350 words reflecting on or describing something you did related to your major in Jewish Studies within the last academic year (a paper, a project, an internship, etc.) of which you are particularly proud.
  6. Letter of recommendation from a UT faculty member. The letter should be emailed directly to scjs@austin.utexas.edu   

3) Todd and Dawn Aaron Endowed Presidential Scholarship     

Purpose: To Support excellence among Jewish Studies Majors
Amount: $2,500 over two semesters
Deadline: March 29, 2024

Eligibility: Current Jewish Studies Major, who meets the Endowed Presidential Scholarship Minimum Standards (GPA 3.75 University-wide, 3.25 Major; Jr or Sr with 45 hrs in residence; consecutive long sessions and full-time status during award). The recipient will be known as the “Aaron Scholar” for the academic year in which the scholarship is awarded. The recipient must plan to be enrolled at UT for the full academic year (two semesters) following the application deadline.

Please note: Students may apply for this scholarship every year, but may only hold it once during their undergraduate education.

Your application includes the following documents:

  1. Completed Application Form
  2. Resume
  3. A PDF of your current UT Transcript (non-official suffices)
  4. An essay of up to 350 words discussing how Jewish Studies has shaped your knowledge about a specific subject and how you expect that knowledge to inform your future academic and/or professional plans or goals.
  5. An essay of up to 350 words reflecting on or describing something you did related to your major in Jewish Studies within the last academic year (a paper, a project, an internship, etc.) of which you are particularly proud.
  6. Letter of recommendation from a UT faculty member affiliated with the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies with whom you have studied. The letter should be emailed directly to scjs@austin.utexas.edu

4) Jewish Studies Minor Scholarship

Purpose: To support Jewish Studies Minors
Amount: Up to $1,000
Deadline: October 20, 2023
Eligibility: Any student who has formally declared Jewish Studies as a minor, including previous scholarship recipients.

Please note: Eligible students may apply for this scholarship once per year.  Students may hold the scholarship in consecutive years.

5) Holocaust and Genocide Studies Minor Scholarship

Purpose: To support Holocaust and Genocide Studies Minors
Amount: Up to $1,000
Deadline: October 20, 2023
Eligibility: Any student who has formally declared Holocaust and Genocide Studies as a minor, including previous scholarship recipients.

Please note: Eligible students may apply for this scholarship once per year.  Students may hold the scholarship in consecutive years.

  3. PDF of your current UT Transcript (non-official suffices)
  4. An essay of up to 350 words discussing how Holocaust and Genocide Studies has shaped your knowledge about a specific subject and how you expect that knowledge to inform your future academic and/or professional plans or goals.
  5. An essay of up to 350 words reflecting on or describing something you did related to your minor in Holocaust and Genocide Studies within the last academic year (a paper, a project, an internship, etc.) of which you are particularly proud.

6) The Robert H. Abzug Scholarship in Jewish Studies

Purpose: To provide scholarship support for undergraduate students at UT Austin pursuing a thesis, research project, or artistic endeavor on any topic in Jewish Studies. 
Amount: Up to $2,000
Deadline: Ongoing
Eligibility: Any undergraduate student at UT Austin pursuing a thesis, research project, or artistic endeavor on any topic in Jewish Studies. 

Please note: Eligible students may apply for this scholarship once per year. Students may hold the scholarship in consecutive years. 

Your application includes the following documents: 

  1. Completed Application Form
  2. Resume
  3. A PDF of your current UT Transcript (non-official suffices)
  4. An essay of 350-500 words describing (1) the thesis, research project, or artistic endeavor for which you are applying for support and how it relates to Jewish Studies; and (2) how this research fits into or advances your academic or professional goals.
    *Items 1–4 should be mailed directly to scjs@austin.utexas.edu when complete.*
  5. A Letter of recommendation from a UT faculty member who is involved in overseeing your thesis, research project, or artistic endeavor. The letter should be emailed directly to scjs@austin.utexas.edu by the faculty member.
