“ANCIENT GEORGIA – CROSSROAD of EUROPE and ASIA”
the traveling exhibition

“Adornment and History” is an exhibition comprised of multimedia presentations (PowerPoint, video), photographs, posters, and pedestal displays of modern replicas of ancient Georgian gold jewelry. The originals were discovered on archaeological sites in Georgia and date from the 25th century BC to the 5th century AD. They are currently housed in the Georgian State Museum.
The concept of the exhibition is to transform these archaeological finds from historical heritage items into contemporary adornments, while preserving their cultural value.
An artistic innovation of this exhibition is the synthesis of various media to highlight the beauty and understanding of these ancient pieces. The design of classically-styled, yet modern dresses to serve as a background for the ancient jewelry is just one representation of this combination of past and present.
Visitors to the exhibition will learn more about Georgian Pre-Christian history, as well as enjoying the possibility to wear reproductions of ancient jewelry.
The project is the culmination of GACC’s ongoing programs “Preservation of Georgian Cultural Heritage” and “Georgian Crafts Development and Marketing,” which aim to preserve historical monuments and artifacts, create economic benefits for cultural institutions and artisans, as well as to increase public awareness of Georgian heritage both locally and internationally.
The exhibition traveled to New York City and Washington, D.C. before arriving in Austin.
