East European Film Series: Before the Rain (Macedonia)

Before the Rain follows three interlocking love stories set against the background of political turbulence Macedonia and contemporary London. When a mysterious event happens in the Macedonian mountains and blows out of proportion, civil war threatens to start. The incident brings together an uncanny group: a young monk who takes a vow of silence, a London picture editor, and a disillusioned war photographer.

The film explores the uncompromising nature of war and its effect the the lives of the unsuspecting, forcing the innocent to take sides. Before the Rain also addresses the ethnic and religious roots of violence and hatred in the Balkans as well as some international implications of the tragic regional conflict.

It won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award.

Pizza and refreshments will be served.

Our Eastern European Film Series is being held on Wednesdays this fall.
