Summer Abroad in Budapest

POLITICS, SECURITY, AND SOCIETY IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
Central and Eastern Europe lies at the heart of the European continent and is the setting for some of the most dynamic developments in 20th century European history. Budapest, in turn, lies at the heart of Central and Eastern Europe: it is a vibrant capital city of two million people, with a lively culture and great connections to the rest of the region. The academic program is based on two sequential courses. The first charts the region's political development from World War II through the democratic transitions of 1989 all the way to today's turn toward authoritarianism. The second explores the social effects of nationals of a state residing in a country that is not their "own," and the consequences of foreign immigration into countries with strong national identities. Both courses will also feature travel both inside the country (to cities outside of Budapest) as well as to neighboring countries (Vienna, Austria, and Cluj, Romania).

Academic Information
Students take 2 courses for a total of 6 credit hours. The course carries a Global Cultures Flag and counts for the IRG International Security Track. Students chose from one of the following three course designations for each 3 credit course: REE 335 / EUS 348 / GOV 365N

Dr. Amy Liu and Dr. Lorinc Redei during the COLA Education Abroad Fair
Faculty
Dr. Redei is an Associate Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. He teaches courses on intl relations, policy-making, policy communication, and the European Union. Dr. Liu is a Professor in the Government Department teaching European Politics. Both have extensive experience in Hungary.
