K-12 Resources
The CREEES Outreach Program has numerous resources available for K-12 teachers in order to increase their knowledge and understanding of our regional cultures, histories and languages and incorporate this material into their classrooms. Additionally, we host many events for K-12 students, including our annual Russia Day and Explore UT events.
Teacher Workshops
Teacher workshops on various aspects of global studies are held regularly, sponsored by CREEES and by Hemispheres: The International Area Studies Outreach Consortium. Workshop topics may cover regional or global issues. Please check the Hemispheres website and the CREEES Events website for upcoming workshops! You can access the archive and the materials for past workshops here.
Curriculum Units & Resources
In collaboration with Hemispheres, the International Area Studies Outreach Consortium in the UT College of Liberal Arts, and individually, CREEES offers lesson plans, curriculum guides and educational sites for you and your students, available here and on the Hemispheres website.
Additionally, CREEES maintains and regularly updates a catalog of online resources and curriculum supplements from other Universities and institutions relating to the Russian, East European and Eurasian regions.
Lending Library
A wide range of supplementary teaching materials for K-12 classrooms and general audiences are available from CREEES for nationwide loan free-of-charge. Much of this material is suitable for community and adult study groups as well. Check out our lending library catalog or contact our Outreach Coordinator to discuss a custom lending library package.
Travel & Professional Development Opportunities
Our CREEES Academic & Professional Development Forum features numerous travel, funding, and professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers and administrators as they learn about Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Check back frequently for updates and new opportunities.
Public Events
CREEES hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year, including many targeted to K-12 teachers and students. Russia Day and Explore UT are some of our favorite and best-attended events. Find a list of all Center events on our events calendar. All CREEES events are open to the public and free-of-charge. For additional events, check the Hemispheres website, as well.
The Olympiada of Spoken Russian
Launched in the late 1960s, the ACTR Olympiada of Spoken Russian is the oldest of ACTR’s secondary school activities. Drawing on the long-established practice of oral exams and competitions within the Russian educational system, the Olympiada has provided successive generations of American high school and middle school students of Russian with a forum in which to demonstrate their achievement in Russian language study, while conversing with native speakers of Russian and meeting with students of Russian from schools other than their own. The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies hosts the state competition for K-12 in Texas in early April every year.
