Six-to-ten week intensive language program; participants receive from 12-to-30 hours of instruction in Russian per week. Lessons offered at various levels of language proficiency, from А2 to В2 (C1 will also be offered if there are enough applications). A minimal knowledge of Russian is required. The Czech language programme – SUMMER FLAS PRAGUE is an intensive seven-week language course arranged exclusively for US undergraduate and graduate students who are in receipt of a summer fellowship from the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship programme. The Czech language programme — SUMMER FLAS PRAGUE meets criteria set by the US Department for Education for approving overseas summer programmes. The course is organized by the Centre for Language Learning (CLL), Institute for Learning and Preparatory Studies (ILPS) at Charles University in Prague.

The course contains 140 hours of language instruction at an intermediate level. The required minimum knowledge of applicants is Novice High, best Intermediate Low of the American language framework ACTFL. You can test your language knowledge using Can do statements according to ACTFL here.

The course also offers non-language activities — some of them are part of the study programme — such as orientation, Prague city walks, library excursions, film screening. Other extra-curricular cultural / social events are optional and their costs are not included in the price of the course (exhibitions, theatre or music performances). Outside Prague weekend trips are also offered.

The course focuses on practical as well as academic language and communication. It strikes a balance between spoken and written communication, as well as between reading and listening skills, without overlooking grammar. It corresponds to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as well as to American Language Framework ACTFL. Individual student support is an integral part of the programme, as well as consulting students´projects and their presentation.

This program provides fully tailored Russian overseas language and cultural immersion programs, academic semester and summer programs of different levels in the Russian language, literature, culture, Baltic, East European, post-Soviet studies, and EU-Russia relations.

No visa is required to study in Latvia for citizens of the USA, Canada, the European Union, and many other countries.

Students with no previous experience learn to understand the culture and to speak at a Novice High or Intermediate Low level. Intensive courses taught at Arizona State University in Tempe cover an entire academic year's worth of material in seven weeks. It's an ideal way for students with previous language experience to get the basics of their next language.

IU's SWSEEL takes place on the Bloomington campus for intensive study of Azerbaijani, BCS, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian.

The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) is an eight-week summer intensive language program for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and professionals. CESSI currently offers courses in the following Central Asian languages:

• Kazakh
• Tajik
• Uyghur
• Uzbek

Nazarbayev University (NU) in Astana, Kazakhstan, in collaboration with the University of Arizona, is pleased to announce their next session of the Summer School in Russian and Eurasian Studies (SSRES), an 8-week intensive summer language program in Russian or Kazakh (SSRES), which is fully FLAS compliant. Undergraduate and graduate student applications are now being accepted, as well as applications of working professionals for the 2019 summer session.

NU is a highly selective English-language university in Astana, Kazakhstan, which has brand new and modern facilities. The NU School of Humanities and Social Sciences houses 37 different specialists on Eurasia from various disciplines, who teach classes for their MA and (upcoming) Ph.D. programs in Eurasian Studies.  During the summer, they offer optional elective courses in Eurasian Studies, as well as hosting a Eurasian Studies Lecture series.
At NU, students study languages in a safe environment that minimizes culture shock, while facilitating interaction with local students, who speak Kazakh and Russian as their native languages and serve as roommates and tutors. The tutoring program, housing arrangements, and cultural programming all enable SSRES students to feel at home in Astana and forge lasting international friendships, from the time when they are met at the airport to their departure at the end of the program. Outside the university's gates, students are immediately immersed in the local language and culture.

Rutgers in Russia is an intensive academic program that offers students the chance to immerse themselves in the Russian language and culture in order to achieve rapid language gains. The program is open to Rutgers and non-Rutgers students, Russian majors and non-majors who wish to advance their Russian language and culture proficiency in one of Europe's most enchanting cities—St. Petersburg. Get info on the program here.

Expand regional expertise and Ukrainian language skills during this 6-week program in medieval L’viv.  The program is offered in conjunction with Ivan Franko National University; 6 credit hours are awarded by the University of Kansas. The on-site director, University of Kansas faculty member Dr. Oleksandra Wallo, is a L’viv native and alumna of Ivan Franko National University with more than ten years of experience teaching Ukrainian language and culture at U.S. universities.  Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students.  No previous knowledge of Ukrainian is necessary. 

During this 6-week summer program, students receive highly individualized Croatian language instruction while living in Zadar on the Adriatic coast.  A program of lectures and cultural activities complement language instruction.  Students study at LinguaCroatica, run by Prof. Mile Mamić of the University of Zadar.  6 credit hours are awarded by the University of Kansas. Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students.  One year of college-level Croatian is necessary for participation.

The Summer Intensive Russian Program at Monterey offers a well-rounded curriculum that allows students to acquire and strengthen reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, develop lexical and cultural knowledge of the Russian language, and develop fluency though a communicative and content-based approach to engage students in the learning process.

Language Institute in Zadar, Croatia

During this six-week summer program, students receive highly individualized Croatian language instruction while living in Zadar on the Adriatic coast. A program of lectures and cultural activities complement language instruction. Students study at LinguaCroatica, run by Prof. Mile Mamić of the University of Zadar. 6 credit hours are awarded by the University of Kansas. The summer program is FLAS eligible. Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. One year of college-level Croatian is necessary for participation. 

Ukrainian Language in L’viv, Ukraine

During the six week program students are enrolled in intensive Ukrainian language courses at Ivan Franko National University, one of the most prestigious institutions in Ukraine and a primary center of learning in Central Europe. The on-site director, University of Kansas faculty member Dr. Oleksandra Wallo is a L’viv native with 10+ years of experience teaching Ukrainian language and culture at U.S. universities. Excursions to multiple cultural sites around L’viv, weekend trips to the Carpathian mountains and to Kyiv, as well as a day-long trip to three castles in the L'viv region are included with the program. 6 credit hours are awarded by the University of Kansas. The Ukrainian language program is open to undergraduate and graduate students at any language level from any major, including students with no prior Ukrainian language experience. 

Apply for a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship at one’s own university to participate in the KU Summer Program in L’viv or Zadar. Application for the FLAS fellowship is made separately, and usually has an earlier deadline in February.

RUSS S-BG Study Abroad in Tbilisi, Georgia: Intermediate Russian

This program counts as one full-year course (8 credits) of degree credit. The Harvard Summer Program in Tbilisi, Georgia, provides students with a full course in intermediate-level Russian language instruction. Language study tracks the content of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences Russian B-level courses (intermediate Russian), preparing students to continue in advanced Russian courses at Harvard or elsewhere; the program includes 140 hours of language instruction.  Our unique situation in Tbilisi also allows us to explore Georgian culture, history, literature, and film, including Georgia’s cultural and political relationship with Russia.  Where You Live and Study  Program participants will stay in double rooms at a small hotel convenient to the historical center of Tbilisi and to Shota Rustaveli Theater and Georgia State Film University (TAFU), where classes will be held. The hotel is also a short walk from the museum and arts district, and offers numerous shopping and restaurant opportunities nearby. All hotel rooms and the classrooms have air conditioning. Wifi is available at both the hotel and the university.   Daily breakfast and dinner will be provided at the hotel’s restaurant. Program participants will be responsible for lunchtime meals except for special program events. Georgian cuisine is a highlight of this program, and participants will have ample opportunity to explore Tbilisi’s restaurants and cafes, which feature truly amazing food at very reasonable prices.   More information available at the Harvard Summer School Website.

The eight-week Russian Language Program (Summer RLP) at St. Petersburg State University offers intensive instruction in grammar, conversation and phonetics at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Additionally, the program’s curriculum includes the three-credit course, “Discovering Russia: Music, Film and Current Press,” taught in Russian by expert faculty. Tutoring by qualified instructors of Russian as a foreign language is included in the program fee.

These programs will be organized as part of the Summer School of Polish Language and Culture at the Jagiellonian University in July and August. We offer Polish language courses, lectures on Polish culture, history and art, as well as on social, political and economic issues. CESSI is an intensive, eight-week language program held each summer in Madison, Wisconsin. CESSI will be held from June to August. Students receive the equivalent of one year of language study during this time and earn eight credits upon completion of the program. In addition to language classes, CESSI students have the opportunity to attend lectures on Central Eurasia; participate in cultural events, including traditional cooking demonstrations; engage with local Central Eurasian communities; and network with other scholars of Central Eurasia. CESSI is a great way for students to gain language skills before studying abroad, applying for jobs, or conducting fieldwork in the region. Students of all disciplines and academic programs are welcome! We offer intensive courses in elementary, intermediate, and advanced Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek.
Graduate students, researchers, and professionals who are US citizens are especially encouraged to apply for the Title VIII fellowship, which covers full tuition plus a stipend of $2,500 for the summer. FLAS fellowships are also available for eligible undergraduate and graduate students, and all applicants (including international students) are eligible for the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI) tuition scholarship or for tuition remission scholarships.
