Grad Student Essay Competition

The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at UT Austin hosts an annual graduate student essay competition. The competition is open to PhD and MA students currently enrolled at UT Austin. The winners will receive a certificate of recognition and continuing students will receive an additional cash prize of $500. The best essay, regardless of graduate ranking, will be nominated as our official selection for Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) Graduate Student Essay Prize. The winner of the ASEEES competition receives free round trip domestic airfare to and room at the ASEEES Annual Convention and an honorary ASEEES membership for the following year.
Essays must be one of the following formats:
- Expanded versions of conference papers
- Graduate level seminar papers
- Master's Thesis Chapters
- Dissertation Chapters
Essays should have a minimum word count of 7,500 and a maximum word count of 14,000 (25 to 50 pages approximately) inclusive of footnotes and bibliography. Submissions must be double-spaced and include footnotes or endnotes.
Deadline: Graduate students must submit an abstract and their essay (as a single pdf) to the committee by the end of the day on May 15. Awards will be announced before June 15. Note: Only continuing students are eligible for cash prizes due to administrative-financial limitations.
