Dhiraj Murthy is a Professor in the School of Journalism and Media and the Department of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from University of Cambridge and was previously a Reader of Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London.

His research explores social media, digital research methods, race/ethnicity, qualitative/mixed methods, big data quantitative analysis, and virtual organizations. Dr. Murthy has edited 3 journal special issues and authored over 70 articles, book chapters, and papers. Murthy wrote the first scholarly book about Twitter, the first on the subject (second edition published by Polity Press, 2018). His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation’s Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (OAC), Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), and Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) Divisions/Directorates. Dr. Murthy’s work also uniquely explores the potential role of social technologies in diversity and community inclusion.

Dr. Murthy founded and directs the Computational Media Lab at the University of Texas at Austin.
