Major Requirements

30 hours of Sociology coursework as follows:

12 hours of required Sociology courses consisting of:

• SOC 302 Intro to Study of Society with a grade of C or higher
• SOC 317L Intro to Social Statistics (or approved substitution) with a grade of C or higher
• SOC 327M Social Research Methods with a grade of C or higher* 
• SOC 379M Sociological Theory

18 additional hours of Sociology:

• 12 hours must be uppder-division
• 6 hours may be either upper- or lower- division 

Of these 30 hours, at least 18 must be taken in residence at UT Austin. Students must complete SOC 327M and SOC 379M in residence. Transfer courses in Methods and Theory may only be counted as electives.

Sociology majors are required to complete a minor or certificate. If a student has a second major, they do not need a minor or certificate. 

*Students may only enroll in SOC 327M twice, and must receive permission to enroll in the course for a second time. If taken before 2020, SOC 317M is equivalent to SOC 327M.
