Graduate Courses and Curriculum

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Degree Requirements: 54 Semester Credit Hours

  • Required Courses: 24 Semester Credit Hours
  • Free Electives: 30 Semester Credit Hours
    • At least 15 within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. 
    • Tracks 1 and 2 (literatures and cultures) students: of these electives at least one must be a graduate seminar on a Peninsular topic, and at least one must be a graduate seminar on a Luso-Brazilian topic (total of two courses).
  • Second-Language Proficiency Requirement: Along with English, students must demonstrate in the language of their area (Spanish or Portuguese) and reading proficiency in one additional language (for example, English + Spanish or Portuguese + Nahuatl or Arabic or Galician or French, etc.). Courses taken to satisfy the reading proficiency requirement are not included in the semester credit hours required for the degree. The proficiency requirement must be satisfied through former coursework, exam, or 10-12 hours of additional coursework.

    Iberian and Latin American Languages and Cultures:  ILA

    ILA 380.  Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory.  This course is an introductory survey of theories and discourses relevant to the study of Latin American and Iberian literatures and cultures. Designed to be taken in the first long semester of graduate study. Three lecture hours a week for one semester.  Offered on a lettered grade basis.  Prerequisite: Graduate standing and consent of the graduate adviser. 

    ILA 385T.  Teaching Practicum.  Offers graduate students the opportunity to receive mentorship and pedagogical training by working one-on-one with a faculty member on the development and design of an undergraduate course (upper-division level) in their area of specialization. The equivalent of three lecture hours a week for one semester.  Prerequisite:

    ILA 386.Studies in Iberian and Latin American Linguistics.  Topics in Latin American and Iberian linguistics, including diasporic and indigenous communities.  Three lecture hours a week for one semester.  May be repeated for credit when the topics vary.  Prerequisite: Graduate standing and the consent of the graduate adviser.

    ILA 387.  Studies in Iberian and Latin American Literatures and Cultures (Spanish).  Topics on the literatures and cultures of Spanish America, Spain and related diasporas.  Three lecture hours a week for one semester.  May be repeated for credit when the topics vary.  Prerequisite: Graduate standing and consent of the graduate adviser.

    ILA 388.  Studies in Iberian and Latin American Literatures and Cultures (Portuguese).  Topics on the literatures and cultures of Brazil, Portugal and related diasporas. Three lecture hours a week for one semester.  May be repeated for credit when the topics vary.  Prerequisite: Graduate standing and consent of the graduate adviser.

    ILA 389.  Studies in Iberian and Latin American Literatures and Cultures (Spanish and Portuguese).  Comparative topics on the literatures and cultures of Brazil, Spanish America, the Iberian peninsula and related diasporas.  Three lecture hours a week for one semester.  May be repeated for credit when the topics vary.  Prerequisite: Graduate standing and consent of the graduate adviser.

    ILA 394.  Supervised Preparation of the Qualifying Paper.  Supervised preparation for the Doctoral Qualifying Paper.  Designed to be taken in the same semester in which the student submits the paper (fourth long semester of study).  Offered on the credit/no credit basis only. Prerequisite: Graduate standing and consent of the graduate adviser.  

    ILA 395.  Supervised Preparation of the Dissertations Fields. This course is intended to prepare students for ILA 396 (Dissertation Proposal).  Over the course of their sixth long semester, students will prepare dissertation field lists and critical summaries of these lists under faculty supervision.  Offered on the credit/no credit basis only.  Prerequisite:  Graduate standing and consent of the graduate adviser. 

    ILA 396.  Supervised Preparation of the Dissertation Proposal.  Supervised preparation for the Dissertation Proposal for the doctoral degree.  Designed to be taken in same semester in which the student develops and submits the dissertation proposal (seventh long semester of study). Prerequisite: ILA 395; graduate standing and consent of the graduate adviser. 

    ILA 398T.  Supervised Teaching in Spanish and Portuguese.   Required for teaching assistants during the first semester that they teach.  Fundamentals of foreign language teaching methodology, with particular reference to the teaching of Spanish and Portuguese.  Presentation of theoretical concepts on which classroom practice is based, in conjunction with teaching under close supervision of the course instructor, individual consultations, reading assignments, and reports. Three lecture hours a week for one semester.  Prerequisite: Graduate standing, appointment as a teaching assistant, and consent of the graduate adviser.

    ILA 399W, 699W 999W.  Dissertation. Offered on the credit/no credit basis only. Prerequisite: Graduate standing and consent of the graduate adviser.
