Undergraduate Spotlight: César Manzanares
César Manzanares

I am majoring in Iberian and Latin American Languages and Cultures with a minor in Sociology. I was born in El Salvador and came to the United States at the age of 10. I had to repeat the fourth grade here in the U.S. but was able to learn how to write and speak English within two years of arriving at the U.S. I am a first-generation student and thankful with my mom for making that happen. I originally applied to pursue a degree in Engineering, but I moved into the Department of Spanish and Portuguese because I came to the realization that I want to make an impact in the Latin/Hispanic community by using my background and applying the skills I learned in my classes and other resources provided to me by the Spanish and Portuguese Department as well as the university in general. My favorite course was Jane Johnson's Service-Learning and Research in Spanish because it led me to discover my passion for Non-Profit work by Interning at a Non-Profit organization that focused on helping a low-income community in South Austin. I want to pursue a career that focuses on helping individuals of low-income communities thrive in their lives. At the Spanish and Portuguese Department, I learned how to do research and refined my writing skills along with the experience learned through internships. I am very excited for my graduation this May of 2019.
