Program Overview

The 2022 Summer Institute for Overseas Teachers of English is a program of the Texas Language Center (TLC) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin). The Summer Institute is for university-level English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching faculty from technical universities or other universities who teach EFL to students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. It is a four-week program with costs of participation covered.

This competitive program offers full tuition, travel, and room and board support for qualified EFL instructors and the opportunity to collaborate and to improve EFL teaching methods within the university-level STEM context. Participants will attend daily seminars on U.S. English-language and pedagogy focused on teaching strategies, application of new technologies, use of authentic materials, and instructional units for practical application at their home institutions. 

This Summer Institute is supported by the TLC at UT-Austin with contributions from private donors. Seminar participants will be provided with roundtrip international travel to Austin, Texas; housing in Austin and Washington, DC; three meals per day; insurance; U.S. visa costs; and transportation to Washington, DC. Tuition is also covered as part of the program, and participants will reside on campus and enjoy full access to university facilities, including libraries and sports centers. The program will conclude with a one-day conference in Washington, DC during which participants will exchange experiences with representatives in the EFL field.
