FIELDS - SYSTEMS - CHANNELS: The Structure and History of East German Television

with Henning Wrage, Visiting Assistant Professor of German Studies at Gettysburg College and expert in German postwar media as well as the theory and history of media in East and West Germany before 1990.

Tue, November 12, 2013 | BUR 337

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Using several video clips from East German Television’s very first broadcast to its very last, his presentation will provide an overview of the function and history of the East German “Deutscher Fernsehfunk” (1952-1990). Professor Wrage will demonstrate how East German TV was in a long lasting and fierce competition with its Western competitors and how this informed program politics and design. He  will argue that the function of German TV can be explained better by observing it as a system of channels, while other East German media rather follow the setup of cultural fields.

Sponsored by the Department of Germanic Studies, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Texas Language Center and part of the fall term lecture series “Once Upon A Time in the East.”
