This conference, which aims to take on the physical and metaphysical meanings of borders, walls and demarcations, is hosted by the Graduate Association of Germanic Language Students at the University of Texas at Austin.

Topics of interest include (but are not restricted to):

  • Geographical borders,

  • Borders between categories (phonological markers, ethnic boundaries, gender

    identities, social stratification),

  • intra- and interdisciplinary boundaries and distinctions,

  • Categorization of cultural artifacts according to genre, periodization, and medium,

  • Borders around and within texts (margin/center, interior/exterior), and

  • Discourses of inclusion/exclusion/othering that create oppositional identities.
