3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Come learn about LingQ (pronounced "link") and find out how Steve Kaufmann, the former forest products executive, says he "got in over his head" in a 10-year project to create the LingQ online language learning system. The talk will describe the initial inspiration and the ongoing challenges. Much like language learning itself, building an online learning community requires perseverance, commitment, and a willingness to accept risk and uncertainty.
Steve Kaufmann is a former Canadian Government Trade Commissioner and is currently President of KP Wood Ltd., which he founded in 1987, after a career as an executive for several leading Canadian forest product companies. He is also co-founder (with his son Mark), and CEO of, an online language learning system and Web 2.0 community. Steve speaks 12 languages, and is now learning Korean. Steve maintains a blog on language learning and has written a book called The Way of the Linguist, A Language Learning Odyssey. He also has a channel at youtube under the name of "lingosteve."
