The  2011 Summer Language Institute, coordinated through the Texas Language Center in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin, is offering students an exciting new opportunity in intensive language learning 

Blake Atwood (PhD, University of Texas at Austin, 2011) is an assistant professor in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies and the coordinator of the Persian language program. He teaches all levels of Persian language as well as courses on cinema and visual culture.

Camilla H. Hsieh is a senior lecturer in the Chinese program within the Department of Asian Studies. She has over 20 years experience teaching first to third year Chinese language courses at UT. She takes special interest in fostering study abroad for Chinese language students, having served on the program’s study abroad scholarship committees, an international study abroad program evaluation committee, and currently serving as the Chinese language program’s liaison to the university’s international office.

Carol L. Seeger, Senior Lecturer, ASL Language Program Department of Linguistics. "I am currently a Senior Lecturer within the Department of Linguistics.  Since my arrival at UT in 1992, I have taught a variety of undergraduate courses including all five levels of American Sign Language (ASL)."

Profiles in Language Teaching at UT: Vidhu Shekhar Chaturvedi : When I made my debut as Research Assistant for American, Canadian and European scholars back in 1992 I was deeply impressed by the ineluctability of having the command on my first and second language for attaining that crucial ability to transpose exactly the nuanced meanings and sense of what was being communicated between two parties who were culturally and sociolinguistically poles apart.

Sandra Ballif Straubhaar -- Statement of Teaching Philosophy: Excellence in teaching is essential in Liberal Arts curricula, since nothing less is at stake than a) the survival of the field and, ultimately, b) the survival of intelligent discourse, based on careful reading, in our national community.

Yukie Aida (Ph.D. University of Texas at Austin, 1988) is Senior Lecturer of Japanese in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She serves as a member of the Advanced Placement (AP) Japanese Language Curriculum Development and Assessment Committee of College Board.

Tatiana Kuzmic (Ph.D. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2008) is Assistant Professor in the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.  She teaches first and second year Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language classes in addition to literature courses on Tolstoy, Slavs in Western Imagination, and literary theory for upper division undergraduates and graduate students.

Karen Kelton is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of French and Italian and the Project Manager in the Texas Language Technology Center. She supervises lower-division French courses and directs the UT Summer Program in Lyon, France.

Curriculum development has been the focus of her career at UT, in particular, building Tex’s French Grammar and Français interactif with colleagues for UT’s first year on-line French program. At TLTC she is the project manager for Grimm Grammar, Deutsch im Blick, and Chansons françaises.

Orlando R. Kelm (Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley, 1989) is Associate Professor of Hispanic Linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin. His professional interests include language and culture for professional purposes, such as Business Spanish and Portuguese. His current research focuses on the creation of instruction materials, including the use of technology in foreign language instruction.
