The University of Texas at Austin is in the unique position of having a university-wide interdisciplinary graduate program in Women's and Gender Studies. The program's large and diverse faculty is drawn from the university's 18 colleges and schools. The wide array of graduate courses offered provides exposure to cutting-edge scholarship from multiple perspectives and thus offers students an unusual opportunity for cross-disciplinary inquiry at the graduate level. Particular strengths of the faculty include African-American studies, cultural studies, diaspora studies, ethnic studies, feminist theories, health and social welfare, international and post-colonial feminisms, masculinities, media studies, performance studies, popular culture, and public policy.

The Center for Women's & Gender Studies offers the Master of Arts degree, two dual degree master's programs with the university's School of Information and the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, and a graduate portfolio program.

The Center for Women's & Gender Studies offers a master's degree in Women's and Gender Studies. The master's degree is a two-year program that prepares graduates to pursue Ph.D work in Women's and Gender Studies at another institution or in another discipline. The master's degree also provides good intellectual grounding for further training and professional development in the arts, business, community and non-profit organizations, education, health care, public policy, social work, and technology.

The Center for Women's & Gender Studies only accepts applications for the fall semester.  The application deadline is December 1st.

 

Dual degree master's programs are designed for students who wish to broaden their academic experience and enhance their career preparation by pursuing two complementary master’s degree programs. Most dual degree programs can be completed in 3 to 3-1/2 years. Details are available from the graduate advisor of each program and from the WGS graduate coordinator.  CWGS only accepts applications for the fall semester. The application deadline is December 1st.
The Center for Women's and Gender Studies offers two dual degree master's programs:

The Graduate Portfolio Certificate in Women's and Gender Studies is an additional credential available to current graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin, along with their Masters or Doctoral degree. The Graduate Portfolio in Women's and Gender Studies builds upon the Center’s rich and broad-based expertise across disciplines and schools/colleges. Portfolio students develop a specialization unique to their own program of work through WGS courses, scholarly papers, and presentations.  WGS Portfolio Students are eligilble for to apply for the annual WGS awards and travel funds for presenting relevant work at conferences.

A Note to Feminist Scholars and Aspiring PhD Students

Do your academic interests intersect with Feminist, Queer, and Black Studies?
In an effort to grow the base of future scholars interested in Feminist and Black Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, we invite you to apply to both the WGS MA programs and the African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS) PhD program by December 1st. 

The Center for Women’s & Gender Studies and The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies share many faculty affiliates.  Applications for both programs will be reviewed.  Select applicants will be admitted to enroll in the MA Program in Women’s & Gender Studies, with a deferred admission to the PhD program African and African Diaspora Studies upon completion of the WGS Master’s Degree (in two years).
