Tuition Costs
The University of Texas at Austin is still an incredible bargain when it comes to peer institutions. Berkeley raised their tuition 32%(!) over the next two years, and the average rate hike for one year for 4-year schools in the country was 6.5%.

Example of tuition rates for a graduate student in Liberal Arts. 9 hours is considered full-time during Fall/Spring semesters.
- $4464 for 9 hours of tuition for Texas Residents
- $8847 for 9 hours of tuition for Non-residents
*Tuition and fees may increase every year about 5%. The master’s degree in women’s and gender studies is designed as a two-year program. Funding may be available during the Fall/Spring semesters. Summer enrollment is not required or funded. Read more about degree and credit hour requirements here. Every year the program admits a cohort of 5-7 students.

Funding Opportunities
All potential students are considered for University Fellowships and TAships if they submit a completed application by December 1st.
Competitive students who are out-of-state may be awarded in-state tuition in the form of a Fellowship (scholarship). Students will also be eligible to apply for Continuing Fellowships at the end of their fall semester for the following year.
Graduate school diversity recruitment fellowships are intended help promote a diverse graduate student body at The University of Texas at Austin. This competitive fellowship program is for incoming students and is open to anyone applying to a master's or doctoral program at The University of Texas at Austin. You may review the Diversity Recruitment Fellowships and alert us if you would qualify as a nominee.
Several of our students receive Teaching Assistantships in departments through out the College of Liberal Arts. When additional positions become available, we notify students and they submit a resume to the faculty member and arrange a meeting/interview. One advantage of the Center for Women's and Gender Studies is that we are an interdisciplinary-program, with faculty in many departments across the University. This allows our students the opportunity to work with different faculty and students, as well as diversifies their studies.

Other opportunities for funding:
Students affiliated with the Center for Women's and Gender Studies may request travel funds (up to $250) and an additional amount (usually $250) from the Graduate School to assist with the cost of travel if selected to present at a conference. Funds will be distributed after travel is completed. Please contact the Women's and Gender Studies Graduate Coordinator, Alma Jackie Salcedo, 512-471-5765, for the application forms.

The University's Office of Student Financial Services administers long-term educational loan programs, the College Work-Study Program (for which graduate students may be eligible), and a short-term loans for registration and other emergency needs.

Example of a TAship:
This is a 20 hour/week employment position on the UT campus. This employment position will qualify Non-Texas Residents for In-state Tuition rates (see Student Employment Tuition Waiver, second row on table attached). There is also a TRB (Tuition Reduction Benefit, third row) to assist with In-state Tuition rate payment.
Unfortunately TAships have not kept up with the Cost of Living in Austin. Students can save money by finding roommates in Austin.

TA appointments are subject to the provisions of The University of Texas System Board of Regents’ Rules and Regulations and The University of Texas at Austin Handbook of Operating Procedures. The salary represents the gross salary and is subject to deductions.
TAs are under the supervision of a regular member of the faculty. Faculty teaching supervisor are determined when assignments are finalized. TAs must abide by the academic and instructional criteria and established policies of the School and the University.
Requirements Include:
- Full-Time Registration: no fewer than nine (9) semester hours of course work during each semester of the long session (and three (3) semester hours during the summer sessions) for any semester.
- Meet the scholastic requirements for eligibility established by the Graduate School.
- Provide satisfactory service to the department and have complied with all applicable University policies.
As required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act, anyone employed by The University of Texas at Austin must provide Human Resource Services, within the first three (3) days of employment, original documentation to establish identity and evidence of employment. Students must meet the requirements of this Act to qualify for this appointment. In addition, satisfactory completion of a criminal background check is required for all employment appointments.
International Students
The International Office's International Student and Scholar Services offers financial information specifically for students coming to the United States from other countries.
Unfortunately, there is no Federal Financial Aid available to international students. Please note the opportunities listed below.

Most of our international students have had external fellowships from such as the Ford Foundation and Fulbright Foundation.
