The Shakespeare Outreach Group, or “SHOUT,” was founded in the fall of 2006 by a group of students consisting mainly of graduates of the Shakespeare at Winedale summer program, and other students interested in both studying and teaching English literature. The purpose of SHOUT is to bring Shakespeare into diverse classrooms across Texas through performances and workshops that culminate in student presentations. Our goal is twofold:

  • to provide opportunities for University of Texas students to study Shakespeare in performance and synthesize their knowledge of Shakespeare by teaching it to Texas schoolchildren
  • to provide opportunities for meaningful learning and academic excellence for Texas schoolchildren in grades 3 through 8, with a special focus on students in low-income and underserved communities

SHOUT empowers UT students to serve as mentors and role models to these schoolchildren, bringing their passion for Shakespeare and learning to the classroom in a personal, hands-on way. SHOUT members aim to increase the confidence of younger students by giving them the chance to make Shakespeare their own through study, memorization, interpretation and group performance. By providing a positive encounter with the University of Texas academics and arts, we encourage disadvantaged children to pursue higher education.

Membership in SHOUT is open to all University of Texas students year round.

Interested UT students should contact Cassidy Schulze or Isabel Dunn, the 2017-2018 SHOUT Co-Presidents, at cassidy.schulze@uteas.edu / ikdunn@utexas.edu for information on the next SHOUT meeting or event.

SHOUT is funded by a grant from the Univeristy Co-op and the Texas Parents Association.
