AADS African Studies Certificate

The African Studies Certificate allows students to engage with scholarship on African peoples, cultures, and history through the theoretical lens of black studies. To earn this certificate, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • AFR 304. Intro to the Study of Africa*
  • AFR 310K, Introduction to Modern Africa**
  • Complete a total of 18 semester hours of coursework, including at least 9 semester hours in residence.
  • Twelve additional semester hours (upper- or lower-division) chosen from courses on an approved AFR course list or with prior approval from AADS2
  • At least one supporting course must carry a writing flag.
  • Students must earn grades of “C” or better in each certificate course.
  • Students may not earn a certificate in the same field of study as their major, and at least one course must be taken outside of the requirements of the student’s major degree plan. (AADS majors are not eligible to receive an African Studies Certificate.)
  • This is not a stand-alone certificate; students must complete the requirements of an undergraduate degree to be eligible.
  • Only coursework the student has completed at the time of final application will meet certificate requirements. A list of approved courses is available below.

** One of the courses must carry a writing flag from the School of Undergraduate Studies and/or place an emphasis on research and writing or an alternative course taken with approval from AADS.

Approved courses for the African Studies Certificate are located in column G of the Approved Course List posted below. To apply to the AADS Certificate program, complete the African Studies Certificate Interest Form and return it to afr@austin.utexas.edu.
