Classics Library

Waggener is fortunate to have a research library and staff dedicated to the Classics, focusing on the study of Greco-Roman antiquity, broadly defined. The Classics Library (CLASS) is located on the ground floor of Waggener Hall and is entered through Room 1. The collection, with more than 25,000 volumes, is designed to support and integrate with the curriculum and research of the Department of Classics and other humanities programs. The Library’s collection focuses especially on primary texts, commentaries, and reference works. These holdings are supplemented by ever-growing electronic collections and by material held in libraries across the University of Texas campus.  The Library is strong in Greek and Latin literature, Greek and Roman history, and classical civilization including art, archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics. In addition to areas for individual and cozy group study for members of the University of Texas community in Rooms 1, 2, and 3, the Library’s venerated Room 8 provides a restricted access room for individual study among a large collection of research material.

Summer Program in Classics

The Summer Program, featuring the famous Intensive Greek curriculum, also offers courses in Latin, Classical Civilization and Archaeology.

Joint Graduate Program in Ancient Philosophy

The Joint Program coordinates graduate study and research in ancient philosophy, with faculty drawn from both departments. Students receive their degree in either Classics or Philosophy.

Visual Resources Collection

The VRC includes the Classics Slide Library, consisting of approximately 70,000 slides for use by faculty and teaching graduate students.

Our digital image database consists of over 14,000 images in formats appropriate for classroom projection and for Web use. Most of these have been incorporated into the Liberal Arts Digital Archive Services (DASE), which is secured by UTEID.
