Internship Course

Internship courses are available as part of the class offerings at Women's and Gender Studies.  Internships are individual instruction courses and do not meet in the classroom. 

The WGS 379L Internship is required course for the WGS major, or students may choose to take WGS 360 Research and Thesis instead.

• Students are responsible for finding their own internships.  Resources on campus include: Liberal Arts Career Services, LACS Internship Services, and Texas Career Engagement.
• The CWGS Austin Activist Guide is also a resource for students seeking internships.
• After locating an internship and supervisor, students must obtain a faculty advisor for their internship. CWGS recommends approaching a faculty member based on research interests and your internship topic. It is best if you have worked with this faculty member before during a regular class. This faculty advisor will be responsible for submitting a grade for the student. According to the Office of the Provost, TAs, RAs, and GRAs are ineligible to serve as faculty advisors.
• Once students have an internship and a faculty advisor, they must submit the Internship Proposal Form (download form .docx. or Internship Proposal Form .PDF) to the CWGS office in order to be cleared to register for WGS 379L (undergraduate) or WGS 384N (graduate).
• The Internship forms must be turned into the WGS Academic Advisor or Graduate Coordinator by the 11th class day (Fall/Spring semester) or the 3rd class day (Summer sessions).  See online academic calendar for exact dates.
• On the Internship Proposal Form, the student and faculty member will explain how the (undergraduate) student will be graded for the internship course. Some students keep a work journal that they submit for a grade, some turn in a large paper at the end of their internship. Other final grade assignments might include a presentation or a larger project that was done for the organization.
• Internship grades are due via the online grading system by the deadlines listed online.

WGS 379L: Internship in Women's and Gender Studies. (Undergraduate)

Experience working in the community or for a nonprofit agency.

10 to 15 hours of work a week for one semester, 120-160 hours total.

Prerequisite: At least 12 semester hours of coursework in Women's and Gender Studies and written consent of the supervising faculty member; Internship Proposal

WGS 384N: Internship in Women's and Gender Studies (Graduate)

Practical working involvement with participating nonprofit and research agencies. 

The equivalent of 10 class hours a week for one semester.

Offered on the credit/no credit basis only.

Prerequisite: Graduate standing and consent of the Women's & Gender Studies graduate advisor; Internship Proposal
