British Studies Talk: Carnival in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night: Delirium in Illyria
Presented by Dr. Wayne Rebhorn
Tom Lea Room, Harry Ransom Center, UT Campus
3pm
Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night has long been associated with the festive activities of carnival, especially its rejection of authority. This is clear in the clown plot, but the main romantic plot is also carnivalesque, exploring, in particular, the theme of gender confusion. In both plots, the carnivalesque rejection of authority finally yields to a return to the norms of ordinary social life, but Twelfth Night is troubling, preserving the disruptiveness of carnival to the very end.
