Creative Writing Certificate

The Creative Writing Certificate is intended for any University student interested in advanced study of creative writing, both as reader and as writer.

CURRICULUM

The certificate program requires eighteen semester hours of coursework, including at least nine hours completed in residence:

Requirements for students following the 2018-2020 Undergraduate Catalog can be found here

Requirements for students following prior catalogs—generally, students who enrolled at UT-Austin prior to the fall of 2018—can be found here. If you are uncertain about your catalog assignment, please confer with your Academic Advisor.

HONORS

V.  Creative Writing 370H, Honors Creative Writing Project.

Applications for the spring Creative Writing Honors course are due in mid-October.  Nine or more hours of upper-division creative writing must be complete or in progress at the time of application.  A University Grade Point Average of at least 3.33 and a grade point average of at least 3.66 in program courses are required for the Honors Creative Writing Certificate to be awarded.

COURSE SUBSTITUTIONS

CRW 325M may substitute for either CRW 325F or CRW 325P.  Students who wish to substitute courses in transfer toward certificate requirements should provide a course syllabus to the English advising office; please note that lower-division courses (CRW 301-320 or CRW 3 HRS on a UT-Austin academic record) may NOT apply toward items II-V in the certificate.

ADMISSION

Academic performance (Grade Point Average) is the primary criterion for admission; the writing sample, personal statement, and degree progress (i.e. four-year graduation) are additional factors. The application requires a short personal statement (approximately one paragraph) about your interest in the program, as well as a writing sample (any genre, maximum of three double-spaced pages). The application is typically open from early March through mid-July for those aiming to begin Creative Writing Certificate courses the following fall.

A small cohort of fiction writers will be accepted for the spring semester. The application will remain open until the course (325F) fills, though priority will be given to students who apply by October 22nd. Please apply here.
