Job Resources

Graduate students should always work with their graudate advisor and supervising faculty member(s) who can assist with the job search process.

Additionally, the College of Liberal Arts provides career coaching to currently enrolled degree-seeking Liberal Arts graduate students. Liberal Arts Career Services specifically supports students pursuing employment opportunities outside of academia and has a lot of job materials and career guides listed through their office.

UT also has a Texas Career Engagement’s Graduate Career and Professional Development Team that is dedicated to empowering all graduate students and postdoctoral scholars at UT to explore, connect, and build communities to pursue professional fulfillment in industry, academia, nonprofit, business, and government. They host professional and career development workshops, have example résumé and CVs, and many other resources available to graduate students looking for internships and jobs.

The Center for Teaching and Learning [formerly known as the Faculty Innovation Center (FIC)] has a lot of great resources as well for graduate student development and professionalization. For instance, they have some great information for putting together a teaching statement and details for creating a teaching portfolio.

Most job postings that have been sent to our department have been shared on our internal email listservs. Students can search the MLA Job Information List for other jobs by setting up a Nonmember Login to access job postings if they don't have a membership. If students are on campus wifi, they also get free access to The Chronicle of Higther Education Jobs — otherwise they have to log-in via VPN to gain access.

The MLA has recently expanded its services for job candidates. Working with Interfolio (a leading provider of dossier services in higher education), the MLA Job Information List will offer dossier- and document-delivery services to job seekers, as well as a job-search-management system for departments. Job seekers who are applying for positions advertised in the JIL--both the online database and the open-access PDF--will be able to apply directly from ads by creating a personal Interfolio Dossier account at no cost (the normal charge is $19 per year).
