I am interested in the history of racial formation, rural inequality, public policy, and the environment in Brazil. My dissertation examines rural black communities descended from fugitive slaves called "quilombos" and their ongoing struggles for land, natural resources, and autonomy in the Atlantic Forest of São Paulo state and neighboring Paraná. I serve as Public History Editor for Not Even Past
