History major requirements

All students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in history must meet the relevant University Core, College of Liberal Arts, and flag requirements as specified by their undergraduate catalog. A student's catalog is generally determined by their first semester of enrollment at the University of Texas. Contact the advising office you have questions about which catalog you should be following. The undergraduate history curriculum underwent a major revision in Fall 2018, so it is important to know your catalog.

Major requirements, 2018-2020 Undergraduate Catalog

30 semester hours of history including at least 15 hours of upper-division coursework and 21 hours in residence:

  • 6 hours of coursework in United States history, of which 3 hours must be in residence (also counts toward University of Texas core requirements)
  • 12 hours of coursework chosen from four different geographic areas:
    • Africa
    • Asia
    • Europe
    • Latin America
    • Middle East
    • Transnational
  • HIS 318W Thinking Like a Historian. Sophomore methods course. Students are encouraged to take HIS 318W as soon as they meet the prerequisite, which is 9 hours of coursework in history.
  • HIS 378W Capstone in History. Prerequisite is HIS 318W and 12 hours of coursework in history.
  • Six semester hours of history coursework counted toward the major must be designated as pre-1800 history.
  • HIS 318W and 378W do not apply toward geographic area or pre-1800 requirements.

All history majors must complete a transcript-recognized minor or certificate.

Major Requirements, 2016-2018 Undergraduate Catalog and Earlier

30 semester hours of history including at least 15 hours of upper-division coursework and 18 hours in residence:

  • 6 hours of coursework must be in U.S. history (also counts toward University of Texas core requirements)
  • 12 hours of non-U.S. history (at least 3 hours must be upper-division) including
    • 6 hours European history 
    • 6 hours African, Asian, Latin American or Middle Eastern history
  • 9 hours of additional history coursework
  • 3 hours of the HIS 350L or HIS 350R seminar course (generally not offered in summer)

All history majors must complete a minor; in the 2016-18 catalog and later, students must complete a transcript-recognized minor or certificate.
