LAH Scholars Requirements

Liberal Arts Honors Scholars Certification Requirements

 

The Liberal Arts Honors Scholars requirements have two levels: LAH Scholars and LAH Distinguished Scholars. Students who complete the LAH Scholars requirements may choose to complete additional coursework and activities to earn the Distinguished Scholars designation. 

The LAH Scholars curriculum includes courses for the first two years at UT; upper-division honors seminars, including at least one with an experiential learning requirement that pairs in-class learning with real-world experiences; academic enrichment activities, such as community service, leadership roles, research, study abroad or internships; and a capstone project, such as a thesis or reflection on an enrichment experience.

First-year courses

  • LAH 102H The Idea of the Liberal Arts, fall semester
  • LAH 104H Professional/Career Development, spring semester
  • One from LAH 305 Reacting to the Past, E 314L Texts and Contexts, or RHE 309S Critical Reading and Persuasive Writing

Second-year courses

  • LAH 112H The Nature of Inquiry, fall semester
  • LAH 103H Civic Engagement, spring semester

First- and Second-year courses must be completed with a B or higher.

Requirements to be completed at any time

  • Complete one upper-division course with an experiential learning component.
  • Complete one upper-division LAH course (can be combined with the experiential learning requirement above).
  • Participate in at least two academic enrichment experiences.
  • Complete a capstone project:
  • Graduate with a 3.25 or higher GPA.

Liberal Arts Honors Distinguished Scholar Certification Requirements:

  • Complete the Liberal Arts Honors Scholar Certification requirements listed above.
  • Complete two additional upper-division LAH classes, for a total of three, and graduate with College Honors.
  • Graduate with a 3.5 or higher GPA.

Liberal Arts Honors Portal

Students can check their progress towards the Scholars or Distinguished Scholars Certifications in the LAH Scholars Portal. Academic Enrichment hours can be tracked via My Credentials. 

*LAH Scholars and Distinguished Scholars certificates are an internal designation and are not transcriptable. However, "Liberal Arts Honors" will appear on the transcript for students pursuing the LAH Distinguished Scholars certification.
