Events
The Brazil Center organizes a broad range of scholarly events. Recent activities include Brazil at 200, a conference marking the bicentennial of Brazil’s Independence and tracing change and continuity in Brazil’s history over two centuries; Foros Urgentes about the recent presidential elections; a play celebrating the legacy of Paulo Freire; an exibition of Brazilian art at the Department of Art and Art History gallery; and an exhibition of politically themed cordel literature at the Benson Latin American Collection, the latter two in conjunction with Brazil at 200.

LLILAS Benson is a partnership between the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) and the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection. LLILAS boasts some 50 affiliated Brazilianist faculty across campus, whose work spans disciplines from anthropology to zoology, journalism to cultural studies, education to social inequalities, and beyond. The Benson Latin American Collection houses over 60 archival collections of Brazilian materials, including documents of political movements, photography collections, art, concrete poetry, musicology, and cinema.
Other gems on the UT Austin campus include the Harry Ransom Center, a world-famous humanities research library and museum; the Blanton Museum of Art, one of the foremost university art institutions in the United States; and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum, official library of the 37th US president.
Fulbright Visiting Professorship
Between 2017 and 2022, the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies and the Fulbright Commission of Brazil jointly coordinated the annual UT-Fulbright Visiting Professorship in Social-Cultural Tensions and Public Policies. The program brings an eminent Brazilian scholar to UT Austin for one semester each academic year. Meet the UT-Fulbright Visiting Scholars.
