LLILAS Degrees

Graduate Program

Graduate work in our preeminent program in Latin American Studies provides outstanding interdisciplinary preparation for students planning a career grounded in the production of distinctive knowledge on a specific topic situated in Latin America, from a fundamentally interdisciplinary perspective. Undergraduate Program

The bachelor of arts degree in Latin American Studies (LAS) has been designed to provide a general, broad-based knowledge of Latin America. The interdisciplinary LAS major prepares students for a rapidly evolving job market that increasingly demands adaptable thinkers with a global knowledge base who are capable of cross-cultural collaboration. Indigenous Language Scholarships (formerly FLAS)

Undergraduate and graduate scholarships during spring and summer 2026 provide tuition stipends for training in K'iche' Maya (spring 2026) or another Indigenous language (summer 2026 only), along with one Latin American Studies course. Application open to all UT Austin students. Contact Ramya Iyer for more information.

Funding for Non-LLILAS Students

LLILAS provides a variety of funding to support research in Latin America and the Caribbean by students in any graduate program. Learn more. [More to come in late October 2025.]

Internships at LLILAS

LLILAS has an unpaid internship program designed to provide undergraduate UT students with the opportunity to gain professional experience by learning about the work of multiple programs within LLILAS or to develop research skills by working with some of our most distinguished Latin Americanist faculty. Our institute is a vibrant and fast-paced environment where students will have the opportunity to interact with foreign students, visiting Latin American professors, government officials, politicians, and private sector representatives.
