Credits

  • Beginning students will receive 12 hours of credit, specifically ARA 601C and 611C, upon successful completion of the program.
  • Intermediate students will receive 12 hours of credit, specifically ARA 621K and 621L, upon successful completion of the program.
  • Advanced students will receive 10 hours of credit, specifically ARA 531K and 531L, upon successful completion of the program.

Transcripts will be available upon request from the Registrar’s office by August 31, 2017 at Get a Transcript. Please note that credits received through the ASI do not count as in-residence credits through the University of Texas.  

Textbook requirements

Each course requires a set of textbooks outlined in the course descriptions. If you already own the books in the correct edition, please bring them. If you have previously worked on the chapters you will be studying this summer, we encourage you to consider purchasing a new copy of the textbook(s) to start fresh. Please bring your books to class on the first class day. Textbooks can be purchased in advance or upon arrival in Austin.

Language pledge

We strive to create an Arabic-rich environment for ASI students, and this requires that all participants and faculty use Arabic as much as possible in ASI-related activities. Intermediate and Advanced students are expected to use Arabic while engaged in ASI activities. This means using Arabic with your professors, TAs, and fellow ASI students at all times while on campus, studying, or attending ASI events. Beginning students are encouraged to use Arabic as much as possible during the first 5 weeks of the summer. Beginners will be expected to use Arabic in ASI activities in the second 5 weeks of the program. In discussions of grades, personal matters, etc, you are welcome to use English.

Arrival and first week

All students must arrive in Austin by Wednesday, May 30, 2017. A mandatory orientation breakfast for all students will be held the following morning, Thursday, May 31, 2017, at which students will receive a range of general materials about the ASI and specific information about their classes. A campus orientation for all non-UT students will be held after the orientation breakfast. In the afternoon, all students will take the mandatory online Arabic reading and listening exams. There will also be an administrative orientation for all non-UT students during this time to review the online component of the ASI. Students’ scores on both the reading and listening exams will be used to finalize class placement. Classes will begin on the morning of Thursday, June 1, 2017. 

Down time

Classes run Monday through Friday. The ASI does not hold courses on the weekends, although students should expect 8-10 hours of homework over the weekend.  The summer is divided into two sessions, with a break between sessions July 7 – 9, 2017.  There will be no assigned homework during this break.

Computers

ASI students will have access to the UT computer labs throughout the course of the summer. For computer lab schedules across UT campus, please visit http://www.utexas.edu/its/campus-labs/. All students are advised to bring their own computers.
