The PFP is open (and encouraged) for undergraduate students of any major to apply. Our goal is to help students obtain “Superior” proficiency in Portuguese.

About The Program

PFP scholars enroll in at least one Portuguese class every semester, and receive regular proficiency exams to chart their progress. As they do so, they receive extra help from language coaches and language tutors. PFP scholars are also required to attend program-sponsored activities related to Portuguese and Brazil. They can also be eligible to receive scholarship assistance for summer study abroad, and based on proficiency progress, when they qualify for the Portuguese Overseas Flagship Capstone Experience in Brazil. This Capstone Experience includes;

  • A semester of coursework at our partner institution in Minas Gerais, the Universidade Federal São João del Rei (UFSJ)
  • 15-week professional internship anywhere in Brazil, which is related to the PFP scholar's area of study.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Full-time UT student in good standing
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Recommended minimum GPA of 3.33

Application Process

*Note: You will need a UT EID to apply

  • Attach a Statement of Purpose to your application (Your statement of purpose should be no more than 500 words and is an opportunity to explain your academic objectives, your long-term professional goals, and how Portuguese fits into both.)
  • Letter of Recommendation (On the application you will need to list a reference that is familiar with your aptitude for learning languages and to succeed in a challenging academic program.)

Financial Aid

The opportunity for Financial Aid is available to Flagship Scholars. PFP Scholars in good standing may receive funding for summer immersion programs in the U.S. and Brazil and funding for the Capstone Year program. Students are expected to seek out other funding sources and scholarships, from UT and outside UT, to complement Flagship support.
