The Warfield Center

John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies

 

Established in June 1969, the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies (WCAAAS) is the research, programming, and community engagement division of the Black Studies Collective at the University of Texas at Austin. WCAAAS supports the research and programmatic initiatives of its faculty affiliates and students, collaborates with local organizations, and encourages creative work that seeks to foster social justice for people of African descent around the world. The Center exists as a lasting tribute to Dr. John Lewis Warfield, who served as former Director of the Center for African and African-American Studies and Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at UT Austin for 26 years.

 

The Warfield Center Plan II Internship offers an enriching opportunity for hands-on experiential learning. With a strong emphasis on program and project-based work, as well as communications and events, this internship is designed to immerse students in meaningful experiences aligned with the mission of the Warfield Center for African and African American Studies (WCAAAS).

Overall, the ideal candidate for the Warfield Center Plan II Internship would be someone who is passionate about the mission of the Center, possesses strong communication and organizational skills, and is eager to make meaningful contributions to the work of the Center.

Communications and Marketing (40%)

  • Assist in developing and implementing communication strategies to promote Center activities and resources through various channels, including social media, newsletters, and digital platforms.
  • Create engaging content, including written articles, blog posts, and visual media, to highlight the impact of the Center's work and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with staff and faculty to ensure messaging aligns with the Center's mission and values.

Event Coordination and Support (30%)

  • Play a key role in planning, coordinating, and executing events hosted by the Center, including guest lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and cultural programs.
  • Assist with event logistics, such as venue setup, guest registration, audiovisual support, and post-event evaluation.
  • Engage with attendees and participants to enhance their experience and foster community engagement.

Project-Based Work (25%)

  • Engage in project-based assignments aimed at advancing the goals and objectives of the Center.
  • Contribute innovative ideas and collaborate with staff on special projects or initiatives to support the overall mission of the Center.
  • Actively contribute to the Caribbean & Gulf Studies graduate portfolio project, undertaking research to benchmark similar programs at esteemed institutions.

Administrative Support and Other Duties (5%)

  • Provide general administrative support to the Center as needed, including assisting with office tasks and managing correspondence.
